Horses have always been one of the themes that I come back to, again and again, in my artwork. And actually, I have sketched horses since I was a teenager. Currently, my two primary series are Horses and Geometric Abstract paintings. My love of drawing horses began as my younger sister fell in love with horses and started horseback riding lessons.
I love the simple form of the horse so perhaps that is why I am so drawn to it. In the 90s I was only working in prismacolor pencil but many of my pieces incorporated horses into the image. My horses are recognizable because of the simplicity making them minimalistic abstract horses.
When starting a painting, and I do prefer working large, I usually make a quick sketch to give me a visual to work with. This works for me especially since I am not aiming for realism. Art collectors that are most interested in my horse collection are scattered around the world. I’ve come to realize that people who have spent their entire lives in the horse profession are falling in love with my work. Primarily, I use a very colorful paint palette, choosing to keep a bit of happiness in my work. Sometimes, however, I am drawn to doing a more subdued palette, incorporating black, white, gray or brown.
Painting horses gives me a certain amount of pleasure. I have recently completed two commissions revolving around this contemporary minimalist style, one involving cows for a cattle ranch in Texas.
